Totemic Guardians in resonance with a sacred space

Adjoining the Hôtel Jules César, La Chapelle de la Charité - also called Chapelle des Carmélites - is a site steeped in history and spirituality. This grandiose baroque vestige inspires silent contemplation. The sculptor Uta Tiggesmeier was invited by the Hôtel Jules César to compose an exhibition on the theme ‘Sacral Totem’ in the chapel as well as in the gardens and on the terraces of the hotel.
The artist creates large-scale drawings and sculptures using a variety of contrasting materials (wrought iron, blown glass, plaster, bronze and terracotta) to create anthropomorphic totems and hybrid figures. Of elegant and pure form, these audacious and sensual beings stride into space. Charged with ancestral symbolism, they tell stories of multiple cultures across time and space. They evoke the way in which human beings have tried to make sense of their relationship to the physical and spiritual world. Uta's imagination explores a parallel world, touching on Norse mythologies and fertility cult studies.
The totemic female Guardians transmit a vibrating force in their upright posture. They resonate with this place which was imagined and created by strong and determined women, the Carmelites in 1634.
