Singing the world to be

a new series of plaster sculptures

Dialogue

Completion of a commissioned site specific large sculpture for art collectors, as part of a radically contemporary transformation of their apartment in a Parisian heritage building into a living and art exhibition space.
I was invited by the owners to create a sculptural work for the antechamber of one of the suites with the purpose to visually separate a private working space from the entrance area.  The spiral staircase made of white plaster and light wood was the inspiration for these two distinct shapes in white plaster that seem to communicate with each other. They respond to the architectural environment by mimicking the soft curves of the staircase which revolves around a transparent elevator. The two organic forms rub shoulders without ever touching and describe an empty space that becomes a constituent element of the work.
The anthropomorphic white figures are reminiscent of a woman and a man in dialogue. Their contours as well as the space between them are rhythmic. The title of the work “Singing the world to be” refers to mythological stories that relate the cosmology and the animist conception of the world of ancient cultures that were and remain “the norm” in many ethnic groups of our land. In the beginning was the word. The dream that sings of the world to come. The rhythm of the drums which transmit the vital vibration. The balance between feminine and masculine forces necessary to keep the eternal wheel of life turning.
